The USO was established on February 5, 1941, at the presidential request of Franklin D. Roosevelt for civilian support for the military.
- Later that year, the first USO center in the United States opened in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
- Following World War II, the USO was dissolved and its facilities closed.
- The Jacksonville, North Carolina, center remained open through the determined efforts of its volunteers and remains the longest continuously-operating facility in the world.
- Reactivated at the onset of the Korean War in the 1950s, the USO has served the morale and recreational needs of American service members ever since.
- The organization that would become the USO of North Carolina was established in 1987 and expanded to meet the area's growing need in 2003.
- Today, we operate four centers and a mobile unit, serving military personnel and their families across the Tarheel State.
