The existence of the USO of NC mobile is due mainly to the generosity of World War II Navy veteran John Goff. In 2009, Mr. Goff was present at a meeting where the USO of NC's vision of becoming "mobile" in an effort to serve and support troops and their families throughout NC was presented. Mr. Goff called the president of the USO of NC the next day to inform him that he has a 34' motorhome that is no longer being used and that he would like to donate it to be used and enjoyed by as many troops and their families as possible. Once the donation was made the process of finding sponsors to assist in transforming the RV into the USO of NC Mobile Center was set in motion. Bank of America saw the need for a vehicle to be able to travel to the troops, so they provided a grant to make the RV "service ready". Verizon Wireless also provided laptops and internet access via a MiFi card and Droid phones with nationwide calling capabilities. Thanks to Mr. Goff, Bank of America, Verizon Wireless, USO of NC volunteers and other supporter, the mobile unit served nearly 30,000 troops, family members and quest during the first year of operations.
